The Thing About this Recession . . .

I read President Bush's speech from yesterday and something dawned upon me. He said he was leaving office with the nation in recession, but he inherited one when he came into office. And if he inherited one, we were all living in one! Anytime a President has an economic issue to deal with, we all do. I did a bit of checking for dates and the official "beginning" of that recession was March 2001, less than two months after he took office, so it seems Clinton left him the seeds of recession, growing. I checked the state of the economy when Clinton took office, that was right after the Savings and Loan "incident" which of course raised the deficit and left the economy scrambling, so Clinton also inherited economic instability. Of course, there was the Wall Street situation in the late 80's at the end of Reagan's term in office, so George H. W. Bush also inherited an economic issue. We all know, from our consumer-crazed mentality that Reagan inherited an economy of major inflation, which has always been blamed on Jimmy Carter. If memory serves though, the interest rates were pretty high when Ford passed Carter the mantle of power, and we know Ford inherited lines at the gas pumps and the price of gasoline putting an end to the "gas wars." So Nixon didn't exactly leave the office in good economic standing, much less the rest of the mess, and there was still Viet Nam. Nixon inherited a pretty troubled office, what with the collapse of Johnson's "Great Society" dream, but the installation of medicare and the elimination of the silver standard and a full scale war that was referred to as a conflict, going in Viet Nam. Johnson didn't inherit that war, he fought Kennedy to have it. I can't really comment on the effect Kennedy had on the economy, as his presidency was so short lived, but the late 50's were definitely a time of recession in the US. Eisenhower is the one president that doesn't appear to have inherited a recession. After WWII, the economy was gaining strength, industry was booming, building was booming, and babies were booming. He did, however; inherit the Korean conflict and left both a struggling economy and advisers in south east Asia, a.k.a. Viet Nam, to Kennedy. Truman inherited a huge war, WWII, but the nation really had begun to move on from the depression through his years in office and things were looking fairly good for Eisenhower, economically speaking. Truman, of course connects us back to FDR, who inherited the Great Depression. Of course, in his attempt to stabilize the economy, he gave us the Social Security system and dropped the gold standard. I think President Bush has given the most insightful statement I've heard in his entire presidency. Recessions are inherited in this country. It has nothing to do with political party! The elimination of a currency standard and the taxation of the barter system will continue to insure that everyone inherits a recession, or worse . . .

Media Frenzy, the Manipulation

I've noticed something these past few months that has recently been confirmed. I realize the campaign season was unseasonably long, but I also remember listening to some conservative talk radio hosts telling their listeners what to do and how to orchestrate and manipulate the outcome of the primaries. I think when they suggested that their listeners vote "the other party in the primaries" it wasn't really about choosing the political opponent, it was about taking the lead away from a stronger republican. It was about making an already previously rejected candidate, the republican nominee. So the republicans could dump this mess and not be holding the bag when the crash happens! Next we have wonderful, total coverage of the RNC, which I remember the pundits bragging about how much larger the viewing audience was for the RNC compared to the DNC. Then there was the ridiculous comment by Sarah P. about Joe Sixpack, and they had to come up with a Joe Somebody else, and quick, so we got "Joe the Plumber." Who really wasn't named Joe and really wasn't a plumber. Sounds like fairly good coverage in the beginning for John and Sarah, but then we got to see who Sarah really is, and now Sarah is just trashing the media, but I think there's more to this. I'll never believe that Joe the Plumber's assistant, turned Joe the unemployed plumber's assistant, turned Joe the author, and is now Joe the war correspondent in Israel, hasn't had somebody behind all this. So, as Sarah, who originally stood in front of every camera and mic, and couldn't get enough of the media frenzy or have her picture taken enough, or get to talk often enough is now attacking the media, while Joe the ____________ (fill in career of the week here) is going to illuminate all of us in regard to reporting.
And while the conservative talking heads are scaring their listeners, which isn't really much of a feat at all, anyway, the repeal of the "fairness doctrine" is about to take place. But you know what, it isn't Congress that's doing it, and it's not the liberal media. The media knows, without a controversy, they lose viewers and listeners. Without "unfairness" there's no marketing. If you think somebody that can promise Rush Limbaugh $400M is not well enough connected in Washington to keep him on the air, you're nuts!
It's the radio stations themselves that are eliminating the voices in the wilderness, and manipulating the programming or programming the manipulation. We have attempted on more than one occasion with two different radio stations to purchase air time. I, however; do not parrot Rush, therefore one station simply said they weren't interested in selling the time. The other station said, the listeners like that talk radio, but if it were up to him, it would all be music, but a message of returning to simpler days is not what he's wanting to promote.
This is all staged. Radio in an uproar, Sarah on a tirade, Joe in Israel, and the analogue to digital TV coming. It's simply about filtering our information and eliminating our first amendment right, by the "will of the people."

Well, I'm Not an Anonymous Blogger, So Here's My Opinion

I've really tried to avoid blogging about Sarah P., because I think she just lives for attention and I didn't want to give her any more, but I just have to make a few comments regarding her last interview. A politician that claims to be a journalist that is trying hard to discredit journalism will never have my vote. She just seems way to adamant against the first amendment. As for cleaning up her party and turning on many of her party members, she may call it fighting corruption, but I call it backstabbing and disloyalty. So she's doing her part for her party??? Now that she's had a few months to think things over, I'm so glad she finally has some "come backs." Really quick on her feet that Sarah P, good thing Katie wasn't throwing a shoe! Now, on to this interview, which I found to be rather hateful and snarky, but then the people she was talking about probably don't care. And by the way, I did just happen to see a clip of her interview on a blog before I saw the exact same thing on FOXNews, so as to her comment about the news getting their information from bloggers . . . what can I say. It sounded like she was actually taking credit for Tina Fey's fame, and then she used the word "exploited." Please, Sarah should be the one thanking Tina. Without Tina's remarkable talent, only the the inner circle of the republican party and the religious right would have heard of Sarah Palin. Well, Sarah certainly did everything she could to be famous, it's just the fame isn't so flattering. She commented more than once about Obama saying his family was off limits and it stood. Well, if she wanted her family off limits, she needed to quit parading them for every photo op and not bring her pregnant teen-age daughter's boyfriend to the RNC. Sarah, herself is the one that turned things into a media free-for all, worthy of the Springer Show. If she doesn't want people commenting on her family and her values, keep all that out of the spotlight. It might have been different if . . . I don't know. But it was Sarah that gave Levi Johnston such an elevated status. There are probably tons of boys that aren't attending high school and have their girl friend pregnant, that weren't even considered to be guests at the RNC. I guess that's a large enough group of individuals to consider herself to represent the mainstream American people. I must say, Sarah P. doesn't represent me or my views, specifically regarding family. She also touched on the Trig issue and how could we even question who his mother is? Well, the events I read that were going on the day before and the day of his birth, left me doubting that she had actually birthed that boy! And if she did, then the decisions made leading up to his birth, indicate her judgment is highly questionable and I don't want her making decisions on my behalf, or that of my children and grandchildren. If she really is his birth mother, why would she take so many unnecessary chances with a little special needs unborn baby? Unless of course, it was some insatiable need for attention.
So, did she set the record straight, in regard to the media, or just take another opportunity to get some attention and try to have the last word?

I Think "Asinine" Pretty Well Covers This

I absolutely could not believe what I read today. Seems some of the real estate in some of the major cities is a real bargain these days. Now, I read the entire article and it would seem there have been so many foreclosures that lenders are actually offering these houses for under $5000.00, many as low as $1000.00 or even $500.00. Of course with the purchase of these homes, refurbishing is a given, as well as code regulation. Now, here's my thoughts on this. Of course, this is an interesting new urban renewal program, as many of these low-end homes are not exactly in the upscale neighborhoods. So, some guy goes in and puts his name on several dotted lines and suddenly he's a construction contractor for the city and county. Oh, I know, the house is in his name, he'll bear all the liability, but the city and county will be calling the shots and then when he meets all the code regulations, his tax assessment will reflect the increased property value. That's right, foreclosed property isn't much value on the tax role. That's one thought, here's another. If these homes are all in such disrepair and in code violation, how did they meet the standard for a mortgage to begin with? I mean I read about replacing wiring, plumbing, etc. We've sold real estate and when the deal is legit with ethical mortgage lenders, they go through the place with a fine tooth comb. So does this foreclosure mess have a lot to do with insurance denial? Clearly there is some sort of tax write off and profit loss going along with this decision, so . . . If these houses can be sold now, for $1000.00 or less, why did the foreclosed buyers have to move out? It just doesn't make sense to have so many empty houses and so many homeless people.

Is Everybody Ready For Change?

Pres-elect Obama has said one thing that truly resonates with me. He is not commenting on foreign affairs, as the US only has one president at a time. Clearly, that statement has undertones. Maybe he's saying he's not in agreement with President Bush or maybe the all out intensive in Gaza is just too intense for him. As I have been following along in his cabinet choices, I see the change seems to indicate from a Bush cabinet, back to a Clinton cabinet, so that's change. I think Jimmy Carter will be the last President of the United States to actually use the term "born again" in referring to his beliefs and the last President to send his child to the school system designed by our government. The Obamas have chosen Chelsea Clinton's "alma mater." I understand the war in Iraq is slated for another 3 years, rather than the campaign mantra of bringing them home immediately. Wow! So far all this change is just making my head swim . . . how about you? I've been trying to get a glimpse of his economic plan to actually see some numbers. Finally, I read it's something like $775B, and he says we're going to be in a deficit for years. Well, deficit for years is hardly change, we've already been there and the last thing this country needs is another president that thinks "money is no object!" There is also the interesting similarity in the figures. I believe this is just about what President Bush proposed and did just 3 months ago. So this is change from President Bush, how? Oh, I know, this time the state and federal contractors get the money instead of the bankers, but it's still the same figures. I guess the difference here would be a more dignified version of the chain gang as the future President Obama spreads around the billions to employ the recently laid off, working on roads and infrastructure. I'm not sure I'm ready to see that change.

More of the Middle East

First, let me just say, this mess in the Middle East is an ongoing example of what happens when man gets in the middle of something bigger than he can understand. As I hear news report after news report about how bad the people in Gaza have it now, I just have to ask. Aren't these the same people that enjoyed their free elections to vote in Hamas? And didn't Hamas hear the warnings from Israel that the rockets needed to stop? Israel gave more than fair warning that the rockets would not be tolerated forever. Israel gave up Gaza, for a Palestinian homeland, why should they have to maintain it, as well as be lobbed with rockets? Why is anyone in the UN blaming Israel for responding defensively. If everyone thinks the Palestinians need to remain a dependant welfare, people with sovereign rights to elections and land, then let them support them. Gaza was a productive self-sufficient place at the point of the land give-away. Why have the Palestinians refused to take the mantle and keep it going? And when they elected Hamas, what did they really expect? The rockets were being fired on Israel from Gaza and Hamas said they would not honor a truce. Israel did not instigate a pre-emptive strike, nor has Israel advanced without fair warning. If Hamas wants the fighting to stop, stop lobbing rockets. If the rest of the world wants to provide for the Palestinians, there is an entire coastline of access, and certainly could be approached, say via Egypt! I absolutely cannot believe the US State Department is not supporting Israel any better than they are. I mean, what would happen in the US, if suddenly the nomadic early inhabitants got the rest of the world to demand pre-1889 boundaries? Oh, yeah, I believe we called that Wounded Knee!

Political Pay to Play . . . What, Here in America?

Surely not! Already now, twice, there is some sort of question of potential ethics problems with people associated with President elect Obama. Gov. Blagojevich looks like he's got some explaining to do, but I do admire the stunt he pulled regarding an appointment. I mean, he's got everyone by the constitution, doesn't he! He is, after all, presumed innocent until proven guilty, and his appointment had nothing to do with any of his alleged phone conversations. Funny, it's the democrats that are all up in the air about this appointment. Nothing like this dilemma even before the Senate convenes and the new President is inaugurated to set the stage. Next there is Governor Richardson's interesting association with contributions and some sort of contracts. I can't believe this didn't come up through his presidential campaign. I guess this is one of the things that truly does boggle my mind. And how did Pres-elect miss these big red flags? I mean, Blagojevich is Illinois politics and so was Senator Obama. Surely with all the questionable people mentioned in association with both of them, they would have run across the same people at some point. And as for Richardson, did Obama inherit John McCain's vetting staff? Not knowing about a grand jury investigation is about like all the interesting tidbits we found out about Sarah Palin, the day after the big speech at the convention. How is it, that politicians can find wisps of dirt on their opponents through a campaign, but are completely oblivious to current, ongoing ethical and legal investigations? I sure hope Obama plans to get on top of current American politics better than he is so far. We just don't need four more years of Haliburton deals!

The Difference between Envy and Admiration

I'm not usually one to want what others have. I'm pretty satisfied with what I have and the things I do want aren't terribly popular on the trendy consumer shopper's list, anyway. I tend to lean toward wanting creative endeavors and tools and supplies for that sort of thing. But I saw something that just caught me and I couldn't help but notice just how much this individual did with very little, yet a great deal of ingenuity. This is one of the best bi-partisan, non-partisan perspectives I've seen since the presidential campaigns began 2 years ago. I sat there and watched and just was torn between enjoying it to the point of applauding alone, in my own living room, and really being envious of his creativity. So, as I prepare for Shabbat, I'm going to put the envy away and the best way I know to show my admiration is to share the link!

A Boomer on the Bus

My daughter was telling me about the "rude" middle-aged guy on the bus, sitting, talking on his cell phone while women were standing. My first response was, yes, that's why I usually dated older men, they knew about the double standard, but then I got to thinking. The guys in my generation didn't have it so easy. When they became of age to date, the ERA was in the forefront. The boomer men didn't know whether to hold the door open, go dutch treat, or "just be friends." Maybe this bus ride is the only place in the world, this guy can just sit and do what he wants, without some woman telling him or making him guess. I still hear little blue haired women telling their greying or balding sons what to do. I always heard the ex-wives telling their ex-husbands what to do, or bad mouthing them in front of the children, their girl-friends, co-workers, and mothers. For some reason, the divorce decree seemed to make these same "incompatible" and "irreconcilable difference" guys, most accommodating. Then of course, there were the children of these "broken homes" that learned to be demanding and in control of all the grown-ups, involved. And now these same guys are just a decade or less from retirement and the world is crashing in again. Just as they are getting the child support whittled down to the last few kids with the second or third wife, the places where they work are downsizing or closing. And we all know the previous generation paid in 1-4% of $3.00 an hour, and it is their legal, moral, and American duty to bleed the social security dry before 2020, and they have the medicare to keep them alive to do it! The last person that told me how little they worked for "way back then," I just couldn't help myself, I had to comment, "making more than that now on Social Security, aren't you?" Okay, we female boomers take our chances where we can get them, too! I thought about the words my daughter said, and I thought, this guy probably did see her out of the corner of his eye and thought of the last check he wrote his daughter, of about the same age. And he probably did see that little old lady standing, and thought "she's not my mother, she can't tell me what to do." My daughter did say, the younger men are much more polite and will give up their seats for the ladies. To that I say good! I'm glad to see the next generation has good bus manners!

No Truce Was the Decision of Hamas

So, why is Israel continuing to receive so much credit for this most recent conflict? As the date for the end of the truce was approaching, Hamas said they would not extend it, and their rockets began to fill the air, immediately. Israel is responding. Israel did not fire the first shot! The Middle East has been in turmoil since there was a Middle East. Gaza has been a mess since George W. Bush decided to override G~D's boundary description and talked Ariel Sharon into land for peace. Apparently Ariel Sharon and George W. Bush were the only two people on the planet that really thought that was a viable option. Has there ever been peace in the Middle East? Gaza is land that was given, and where's the peace, even there? Now, clearly, the Roadmap to Peace is as failed as any other part of the Bush Doctrine. The problem here is, Sharon is still in a coma and although George W. Bush is conscious he's leaving office in less than a month, and Olmert, is also leaving in a couple of months. That means, the only consistent party represented in this whole mess is Hamas, who was a recognized terrorist organizaton before President Bush made them a political party with his "free election" goofiness! Not to belabor this point, again, but the politicians keep missing this point. Every time we want to deal with a nation representing the interests of the Arabs, we call upon Egypt to negotiate . . . Good idea, since the Sinai Peninsula was also one of those land for peace deals, and what happened to that? The Palestinians have split up and gained double the bargaining power. Why? Why can no one see that if the Palestinians can't agree upon what they want, the list of demands will be endless? If, in fact, the Arab nations wanted the Palestinians to have land and be a people, the Sinai Peninsula would have been a wonderful idea, as would the Golan Heights or any of the rest of the land that has already been negotiated for peace. The land is gone and there is no peace. A soldier named Shalit has been kept for over two years as a negotiation "piece" for the Palestinians. They want hundreds of prisoners released in exchange for his release, and there is no known evidence that he is alive and well, not to mention, he has not broken the law, only guilty of serving his country . . . The same country that continues to concede land and prisoners in hopes of his safe return and peace. Now, I'm going to offer this. If Israel were doing things according to G~D's plan, there would be no negotiations, no land deals, and no success against them, but Israel is not. The Six Day War is proof, Israel could have the blessing and victory of G~D, but they've rejected it. The Arabs think they can demand it, and the Americans think they can authorize it. Well, everybody's wrong! There won't be peace in the Middle East until there is holiness in Jerusalem. Having been there, I know these three facts regarding negotiated peace or power brokered peace for the Middle East. If Islam were about peace and holiness, the presence of the AlAqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount would be enough, but it isn't. If Christianity had the power of the Holy Spirit, their presence in Jerusalem would be enough, but it isn't. If Judaism were truly complete, the re-establishment of Israel would have the blessing and peace of G~D, but it doesn't. Until G~D establishes HIS Peace Plan on earth, there will be no peace in the Middle East. As I mentioned, all three major religions have a significant presence in Jerusalem; Jerusalem is already divided, and the battle continues to rage and the politicians continue to stage . . .
Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. The Colloquial Charm of Rude Americans

I think I have finally happened on to a bit of truth that has eluded me for years. We've tended as a nation to be somewhat offended that other countries consider Americans to be rude. I think we Americans have chosen to use the term, stress, to explain our own American reaction to rude Americans! I think rudeness in close proximity accounts for the high level of stress, and the holidays exemplify my point. The holidays are stressful because we go out of our way to surround ourselves with people we wouldn't ordinarily choose to spend a great deal of time with, for what becomes obvious reasons, once we are all gathered. And then there are the office parties, etc. in which we must stress just a bit over whether or not the last round of gossip will be broadcast by someone that enjoys just a bit too much festive imbibing. There are then the quality discussions that possess just a bit more emotion and passion than other times of the year because our society is inundated with pictures and movies and advertisements of what "should transpire" in holiday celebration. Well, for the most part, we've all tried so much for so long, we've only managed to take the FUN out of dysFUNction. Americans are for the most part, rude. And if they are being polite, it's probably because they are gathering their info for the next conversation they'll be having with someone else. My husband and I celebrate Hanukkah and on December 25, Messiah's birthday. Christmas trees and Santa are not part of our celebration and since my daughter has held me to account for anything she deems dishonest from her childhood, I refuse to participate in lying to my grandchildren. But like most grandparents, I'll tolerate just about anything to spend a little time with the grandkids. And you know in your heart of hearts, you cherish that time with them, because they are going to grow up and become adults, in which they will play into the stressed and stressful game we call family life . . . Besides, our family each has their own personal secrets and circumstances that are simply not the business of other family members, you know, like siblings and offspring, so we don't go in for the big generational family gatherings, much less aunts, uncles, and cousins from out of town! We did that for my Grandma's 90th birthday and about an hour was plenty of quality family time. We all exchanged the usual chit chat, "how's it going," "my your kids/grandkids have really grown" and then take tons of pictures so we all have a record of having gathered in the same location in this century and go on with life. I asked my uncle how he'd been, he answered, we had a moment of awkward silence, then I said, "well, good to see you." He asked me if that's it? . . . see each other every 20 years and make two minutes of small talk? I said, "Yes, I think that's it!" It's absolutely amazing how many traits must be genetic when you watch a herd of humans that are blood related without being lifestyle connected and conveniently, geographically located. We live over 200 miles from any of the family that is speaking to us and I am apparently the hostess with the leastest. The last time my mom was here, she sat in their truck for several hours reading, snoozing, and listening to the radio. Our daughter came as close to dark as possible on a Friday and planned to leave on Sunday and spent her time here, text messaging. So, since our family all gathered for Grandma's big birthday, there was really no need to do that for Jesus's. Now that we've all survived another year of celebrating stress, I thought about doing some introspection and soul searching as to making some personal social improvements. Although, I think I'm just a rude enough American, to enjoy the fact, I'm not popular!

Excuse me, What or Whom Are We Celebrating?

I try to maintain a pretty good attitude, most of the time, but this particular time of year, this particular year has just been annoying. I'm tired of listening to Christians complain about a secularized Christmas. If Christians don't want it secularized, stop all the shopping and Santa stuff. Santa is nothing more than the socially acceptable way to torture children, by having them sit on a stranger's lap for the camera, after you've repeated the mantra "stranger danger!" And, oh let's not forget the priceless lesson of teaching them that it's okay to lie, if there's a good reason and you're a grown-up! And quit finding religious legends for candy canes and Christmas trees for the rest of us to endure. If you want a religious holiday, set the standard, but quit your complaining that the rest of us are messing up your holiday. You sound like a bunch of Scrooges!
I read something the other day about a big Christmas celebration in Baghdad. I quote from the linked article:

And yet, since the American invasion of Iraq, the Christian population has declined by 2/3. In 2003, although the Christian population claimed repression under Saddam Hussein, it was about 1 and 1/2 million strong. Now, in 2008, the Christians number, roughly a half million, and few can get into the US for refuge. They are now fleeing Iraq and having to go to other Muslim countries. Shouldn't we in America be offering refuge, especially to those of "the household of faith?"
One more article really bothered me this past week and I realize this is not the general Christian attitude, but I don't understand why this particular thing would be happening, especially this time of year. A woman was attending a Florida church, got involved with a guy that didn't go to church, got too involved with him and then did the unthinkable . . . She told a church lady! The church lady of course told her to end the relationship, then when she didn't, took her before the group of church ladies to be admonished. She said she'd stop attending the church. Now, that wasn't good enough for Pastor Christmas. That's right, the Pastor of Grace Community Church is the Rev. T. Scott Christmas. Is this not just priceless? Now, she stops attending and then receives a "Merry Christmas, Peace on Earth Goodwill to Men" letter, informing her that if she doesn't break up with this guy, she will be publicly humiliated on January 4. I never read whether she would be forced to attend this public humiliation, be given a scarlet letter or perhaps a simple "stoning." Pastor Christmas says he is going to do this and he claims to be Scripturally justified. Did I mention her children continue to attend? She's already out of his congregation, she's not attending. Just how much control over the world does this guy think he needs?
I don't have a Christmas tree, I'm not shopping at the malls, and Santa isn't coming to my house, but I do very firmly believe in Messiah, and in this statement from what Christians call the Christmas Story in Luke 2.

Now, let me think. What do we call it when there is a recession, fear of a depression, job losses, hunger, and factories closing, while the legislators accept their cost of living raise? American Democracy, yeah, that's what it's called, you betcha!
Some of the members of Congress have voiced their disapproval of acceptance at a time like this and a few have made magnanimous statements in behalf of the money being given to the elderly. Well, they're getting a raise, too in January. It says the average person on Social Security will only be receiving a little over $1150.00 a month. You know, one person living alone, and usually with their home and car paid for, that's really just not too bad. If Congress is going to vocalize concern, what about all the homeless families from foreclosures and what about all the working people that will not have any paycheck when January arrives, much less a cost of living increase? What about all that? We have way too many people receiving money for doing absolutely nothing and that's what's gotten us where we are. This is not an industrialized nation, any longer. We have professional politicians, professional students, healthy people collecting disability, and everyone feeling they are entitled to collect "what they paid in" longer than they even worked for a living, much less the percentage that was paid in. Congress is nothing more than puppet theatre. Social Security is a pyramid scheme in the core of socialism, but you won't get a retired republican to listen to that! Medicare and Medicaid have simply turned all the health care into county and state facilities. And let us not forget, Congress has their own medical and retirement plan. They can talk about how much more the seniors deserve, but Congress is the one with the legislative power, and so far that's being used to insure that members of Congress don't have to live with their own decisions. I just know, in my heart, Congress is doing such a bad job, so "we the people" will want just a two branch government system. The House is a mess and a major percentage of the Senate is moving to Obama's Cabinet. I think we've all seen the e-mail that's mentioned If Con and Pro are opposites by definition, then it would follow, Congress is the opposite of Progress. What if true representation were as real as taxation? Maybe it's time that all those in Washington remember that they are servants of the people, not our masters. Maybe it's time that America actually got back to producing something besides politicians, recipients, and debt; and allow those that are actually producing to be represented.

Now Just Who Is Answering to Whom?

Can you believe it? $350B in TARP to banks, and when questioned, they are responding with outrageous answers, like we're not going to discuss that information, we can't really talk about that, or my favorite, we haven't really tracked that information. Now, these are banks that already have made money twice off of bad investments, once by extracting interest that left the entire principle still to be paid, then upon foreclosure, the government basically handed them a blank check at the taxpayers expense. Oh, I know, there were amounts written on the checks, a limit, but with no requirements as to what they did with the money, how it would be spent, or obviously no reason to give an account. I find this just price less after what the Big Three got put through, but then this is America, we don't actually make anything anymore, except rich bankers, and unaccountable politicians. Now, there we have an abundance of product! So top bankers have been given enormous paychecks and bonuses after having done such a poor job, the banks were begging for loans from the Middle Class . . . and got it! I can tell you right now, why the banks were failing if they don't track the money that they are entrusted to manage. It's going to be just like water through their fingers, and it apparently was. Will they get the remaining $350B, since this is already gone, what in less than two months? I think bankers must be interesting individuals. While they are crying poor mouth, they are living large, and obviously willing to take anything they can, from those with fewer options! Could any of us have gotten a bank loan without answering a banker's questions? We went to withdraw a tidy sum of money from one of our money market accounts and the bank officer wanted to know what we were going to do with it . . . and it was OUR money!!!
I've had some personal dealings with the banking folk. They do expect to be in everybody else's business and they will get pretty demanding if they do not get the answers and action they expect, but they can turn around and be completely unaccountable, give information known to be false and just blankly stare at anyone listening, without batting an eye. The bankers make the car dealers look pretty scrupulous!
So, now that we understand the conscience of those in the banking industry, I'm more than a little sad that the government has given our money to them and the bankers answer to no one. Our government is providing for the banks, using our money, and the banks are unaccountable. How long should that particular attitude of non-accountability and method of business be financed? The banks are now more powerful than the government and a bank employee once told me, banks don't make mistakes. Well, maybe banks calculate very well and don't make mistakes, maybe this was their goal all along, but it would appear those choosing to deal with some of these banks and bankers have made a huge mistake!

The President Invests in Detroit

Although I was not happy with the treatment the Big Three received from Congress, after the bankers were given billions of taxpayer dollars to retire and party on, I do think Detroit is about to become a ghost town. I don't agree with President Bush's auto bail for several reasons, but the top two are simple. First, this is only a band-aid until the next administration is holding the bag. The second reason is simply sad. A band-aid is useless when life support is what's required. The Big Three are already nearly buried in their own product. People have not been buying vehicles because unemployment is up, loan opportunities are down, and gasoline has been outrageous. We can't afford the vehicles that are already assembled, so the American auto industry, for all practical purposes has already died. This loan is to keep the Big Three on life support for the retirees and the other businesses that are dependent upon the auto industry. If there are no workers, then there is no withholding to fund the medical expenses of those already on pensions. Building automobiles is really not the issue on this BailOut, well actually, for the automakers, it's only a loan, and it comes due quickly. By March, the Big Three have to prove themselves viable, or the loan is due in 30 days. We already know there are more 2009 models already made than we need, and we already know, with all the assistance the banks have been given, they aren't interested in making loans. So, when the new models hit the showrooms and nothing moved, then the recession was officially announced and spending got even tighter, now it's the holiday season and people are truly frightened. There are no automobile sales happening. And in case everyone forgot, January and February have always been slow months in the auto sales business. There's no opportunity for viability of the Big Three between now and March. We the people know that, the Big Three know that, and the President should know that!

Is Rick Warren, the next Billy Graham?

I'm guessing we are hearing about the "next pastor to the nation and to the presidents." Rick Warren has all the right stuff! He's ecumenically moderate, just like Billy Graham. He is highly marketable and draws a large crowd, just like Billy Graham. He is well spoken and writes books that draw purchases, just like Billy Graham. His messages and his service style is "user-friendly" and raises little controversy, really . . . just like Billy Graham and just exactly unlike the prophets of Scripture and apostles of Messiah. I'm sure Rick Warren makes a number of people feel good and find hope in the midst of a mess. I remember attending a Billy Graham "crusade" in the 60's. It was highly emotional and felt "good." I remember, in the 90's, attending behind the scenes for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and it was highly orchestrated and embarrassing. Granted, Billy was no longer personally leading the cause, but supposedly his organization still sanctioned the event.
I guess, all I can say is this. If Rick Warren plans to spend the next fifty years the way Billy spent the last fifty years, I'm not sure America's society will survive another fifty years of an ecumenical gospel. From the looks of things, it's been pretty powerless, so far. As to Rick Warren being the next Billy Graham, I think the most significant trait the two have in common would be this: they both have preached an emotional "gospel" of goodness without the need to repent!

Let's Talk Peterson Men, Shall We?

I see that retired police officer Peterson is engaged to wife number 5, and the divorce or whatever from wife number 4 is either still pending or unanswered, whereas fertilizer salesman Peterson sits on death row. I have a real issue with this entire situation and frankly, I think it's a test to see just what the public will accept in the way of propaganda, and I think it's reprehensible.
I awoke in the morning of December 25, 2002 to the news that a pregnant woman in California was missing and . . . I told my husband then, that I thought this was some sort of propaganda, in that any adult had to be missing for at least 48 hours to be considered a missing person, much less make national news! Of course, as the headlines continued through the winter and early spring, I could see a media frenzy and a political power play to make this a capital case without any true evidence, and I was not wrong. President Bush signed into law with Laci's mother as a witness, something to the effect that Scott was to be railroaded by laws after the fact, and sure enough, he was. Granted, Scott Peterson was no saint, but did he kill his wife? I truly don't think so. I worked as a funeral director for a number of years and in working with the coroner's office, we recovered bodies that had been in the water for some time. I truthfully do not believe for a second that the bodies that were found in April of '03 were placed in the water in December of '02, with one contained in the other. I simply do not believe, if there was a pregnant body cast into the sea in December of '02 that the remains, remained for 4 months. Way too many hungry critters in the ocean in the winter . . .
Now, let's talk about Drew Peterson, who will never even worry about a serious offense, much less death row, because he was a cop. He, like Scott, was unfaithful, although unlike Scott, Drew has a history of this. Drew, according to the timeline I can figure, met all of his wives while still married to the last one, except his second wife. The information indicates she met him as a single man and divorced him as a delusional man, but he already had a girl-friend, which just happened to be, or become his next wife! She's dead in a bathtub in 2004, divorce pending, no signs of drowning, no signs of water, but she's dead, none the less and it's ruled; accidental. Really! Now, Stacy, the wife that was the girl-friend when the last wife died is missing and Drew is still out, enjoying a social life while the grand jury apparently scratches their behinds and picks their noses. Not only is Drew enjoying a social life, he's engaged, according to FOXNews.
I just can't help but wonder what gives, other than one sold fertilizer and one was a cop, and the one that was a cop was older and more shall we say experienced . . .
I think Scott Peterson was railroaded and scorned by a rejected strumpet, that has cost him his freedom and may cost his life. I think Laci found out about his affair, stormed out, and who knows . . . what happened that night.
Drew, on the other hand, knows how to make a crime scene appear and also is well connected.
Could it be, that a fertilizer salesman simply was stupid and unfaithful and a cop, on the other hand, has figured out, just what the system looks for. I think so. I also think Scott Peterson was the one point this present administration took to make regarding unborn life. In six years of a 7 of 9 conservative appointments on the Supreme Court, a Republican majority in the House and Senate, and a republican White House, nothing has been done to stop abortion, but another man is on death row, supposedly for the pro-life cause.
Now, in Illinois, Land of Lincoln, and home to Chicago politics, a questionable cop gets to go on about his life and who knows, maybe become "abandoned or widowed," again . . . Maybe Drew could date Scott's "old girl-friend" Amber Frey. But then perhaps she's too old for Drew,, over 30, by now, but she doesn't seem to mind dating married men that she describes as "widowers."
As a woman, I can most assuredly state, I would feel much safer with Scott Peterson, than Drew Peterson!

What Does Another Interest Reduction Really Mean?

I'm no financial expert, but it would appear, those in charge, are not either. Now that banks have decided to not lend money to everyone that walks through the door, and not give credit cards to every person that wants to be in debt, the Feds drop the interest rate to 0%-0.25%. This is the tenth significant drop in just a little over a year, but keep in mind, according to our leaders, the economy was strong in July!!! Now that the truth is out, it is simply casual information to refer to the recession that began last December. So, basically we have three factors to consider. One, the government and the banks are pretty sure, we the people, do not know diddly-squat! That's right, they think we only know what "they" tell us. So, for months and months, they told us every things was fine and strong as we shook our heads and clambered for some sort of financial stability. When it finally became apparent that we were onto the real deal, they admitted the problem and dropped the gasoline prices. What a bonus in the deal. Thousands of Americans have no place to live, their vehicles have been repossessed, but hey, gasoline is cheaper than it's been in 5 years. Second, we are now being encouraged to spend. In case we haven't noticed, we are a nation of consumers and perpetual motion is the basis for our economy, so if people don't spend, our economy will completely collapse, if it hasn't already. That's something that just keeps resurfacing in the back of my mind. As "they" tell us all the tools they still have in their bag of tricks to avoid a severe financial collapse, I can't help but think it's already severe. And either this has come as a complete surprise to them, thus total incompetence, or it's just that much more smoke and mirrors to distract our attention from the inevitable; thus total deception. Either way, doesn't eliminate the fact that this is severe, as we are now reading headline comparisons to the 1930's. If it's taken them a year to admit a recession, how long will we be in a depression before "they" tell us? The third and final factor in this has really got me stumped. With the banks stiffening their lending qualifications and more people facing foreclosure, repossession, and unemployment, the only people that the reduced interest rate will truly affect, are those saving, or trying to. The banks aren't dealing with borrowers, and not making any money off of foreclosures and repossessions, so what happens when the savers, the money marketeers, and the CD holders quit doing business? Will that really strengthen the economy? When the person of average or middle income has no reason to deal with banks, which is where this is headed, what then?

A Good Word for a Great Product

I'm not going to give my perspective on any political happenings going on for now. I think I spend enough time and energy giving political comment, probably too much. Today, I want to give credit where credit is due. Last year, I ordered some books at Amazon.com and it was fantastic. They arrived sooner than expected, in great shape and no guesswork. I say in great shape, because the purchase I was making was no longer available new, I was buying used. By the way, Amazon.com, carries my books, as well. But this was an independent person selling used books through Amazon and I was amazed and impressed, and very, very satisfied. This year, I got a bit more adventuresome after dealing with a private nursery. I was looking for coffee trees. I'd read about people growing them as house plants and since we have a new greenhouse, I thought that sounded like a great addition. I ordered them from the private nursery, Gurney's. I was dumb, in that I didn't read all their rules before I made the purchase that included one item they chose to send right away and the rest will be in a few months, when they see fit. So, as you have probably guessed, the entire shipping charge went on the small inexpensive item that they sent immediately, and they will ship my coffee trees, in the "proper planting season" . . . I live in Missouri, I had no idea there was a proper planting season for coffee trees, here! I exchanged a few e-mails to no avail, and they offered to let me cancel my order. Well, as I already mentioned, the shipping on the entire order has already been paid. . . They are pretty smart on that deal and it makes sense, since this order is a one time deal. There won't be another. My husband reminded me, through all this, that we got burnt with them a few years back by mail order. Anyway, back to Amazon. When I realized Gurney's was going to be making the decision for my horticulture endeavors, I did a Google Search for coffee trees. Amazon.com came up. I checked it out and a nursery called Hirt's Gardens, Inc. has their products available through Amazon. I placed the order, and it was a better price, I might add. Within days, my shipment arrived in beautiful condition. I now have lovely little coffee trees all potted and planted and ready for the event for which they were purchased. I recommend Hirt's Gardens for your gardening needs.

Learning from History

This is going to be a short and to the point, blog. The Democratic House that voted to give the Big Three the billions dollar bail out is the same Democratic House that blustered and blustered about the Iraq War and no blank checks and rubber stamped them anyway for the President these past nearly 2 years. And this is the same Democratic House that designated $700B for the banks to play with, and this Democratic House is sticking to party preferences in that unfortunately Democrats are always quite free and generous with the taxpayer's money. History repeats itself repeatedly with a Democratic House. Now that the Republican Senate has refused this bailout, we can also see that, although this same group of Senators more than graciously gave their banking buddies $700B, and has had no trouble financing wars, is not about to part with the small crumb the Big Three were begging for. But I have to give this Republican Senate group the credit for seeing a good or bad investment. They know, the banks will "bring a return." And they know waging war is power, but the Big Three does not look like a sound investment at this time, and then of course, there is the Republican victory, in that the last powerful union will collapse under the failure of the Big Three. History looks to be repetitive here at the Senate, as well. I don't know why the general public has said they wouldn't buy a vehicle from a bankrupt company, they don't mind flying on reorganizing bankrupt airlines! Now, Big Three, hear this. The President is talking about bailing you out. Let me tell you this, we need to consider history, one more time. Our current President has a history of investing in entities that don't exactly have a bright and profitable future. Consider his oil company in the 80's, consider the national debt in the past 8 years. Our President doesn't exactly have the Midas touch. Might want to consider, Big Three, Congress hasn't veered from history, the Senate isn't veering on their stand, and I'm guessing the Third Strike, even if you get the money, will be from the man that invests in failing companies. It looks like this history lesson is indicating, with or without the money, the Big Three are about to be history.

Come On, Now, Joe!

Well Joe the Plumber has written a book and apparently he'd like to make enough money to never have to consider welfare again. He's giving interviews and frankly, the more he says, the more I find that he doesn't speak for me, and if he represents "average America," we are in trouble! He mentioned how he felt about John McCain, and actually used the word, hypocrite, in his commentary. He also said how "dirty" he felt knowing how McCain was voting in the Senate. Well, Mr. Joe the Plumber, let's reassess the use of that word, hypocrite. It would seem a mirror would be a good place to start, or maybe he truly doesn't get it. Perhaps Joe the Plumber doesn't realize he was merely the caricature in the flesh of Sarah Palin's "Joe Sixpack!"

'Joe the Plumber' told conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Tuesday that he felt "dirty" after hitting the campaign trail with Republican presidential nominee John McCain and "seeing some of the things that take place," Politico reported.

Joe Wurzelbacher said he was specifically put off by McCain when it came to talk of the $700 billion bailout.

"When I was on the bus with him, I asked him a lot of questions about the bailout because most Americans did not want that to happen," Wurzelbacher told Beck. "I asked him some pretty direct questions. Some of the answers you guys are gonna receive they appalled me, absolutely. I was angry. In fact, I wanted to get off the bus after I talked to him." . . . but he didn't!
Wurzelbacher said he stayed on the trail with McCain "honestly, because the thought of Barack Obama as president scares me even more."
Wurzelbacher, however, offered kind words to McCain running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
"Sarah Palin is absolutely the real deal," he said.

So, Joe the P, the every day man on the street that campaigned for John McCain says John is a hypocrite, and we've read that Sarah Palin has turned on just about every republican she's every worked with and Joe the Plumber didn't get out of the vehicle when he felt "dirty" and when he sensed the hypocrisy . . .
Seems Joe the Plumber will sell his soul for a moment of fame and to sit by the hot chick!

Happy Holidays ?

This year marks a particularly strange time in American history. I don't think there is anyone still alive that hasn't bought into some belief of entitlement from the US Government and I don't think there are too many people that aren't affected or related to someone affected by the slowing job market. Is there anyone that isn't affected by tomorrow's value of today's investment? If you haven't noticed an increase in prices, you've not been to the store in quite some time. With all these reasons for "merriment," I've simply been underwhelmed at the concerns and solutions of this year's Yule Tide Season. First, we have the atheists wanting to make their statement about the holidays, and truth be told, there are more Christmas traditions from pagan beliefs than the Bible . . . like all of them. So, the atheists want the Winter Solstice back without religion. The Christians want everyone to think Jesus is the Reason for the Season, as they spend money and tell their kids to be good, for Santa to come. Then of course, there is Hanukkah, and the concern of where to include a Menorah in the politically correct festivities. I read something today that I found sad. The source for the article I was reading stated stealing a Menorah is considered anti-Semitic, but stealing a baby Jesus is a prank. I, personally, think stealing is anti-social for all people and beliefs. Well, I found the latest solution for this concern. That's right, for outdoor Nativity Scenes or the Creche' as they are now called, a GPS transmitter in the baby Jesus. Since 3 letter initials have become my pet peeve, I had to stop and think this deal through. If Jesus is the Reason for the Season, and Christians truly believe this is G~D's holiday to celebrate, wouldn't HE be watching over all the baby Jesuses? I wonder what G~D thinks of being replaced by GPS? And if Santa knows who has been naughty and nice, why can't he find these baby Jesus thieves? I just don't understand why this holiday must continue to "save" the consumerism and be a point of contention amidst varying belief systems. Do the Christians really believe the lack of enthusiasm for Christmas is persecution? Do the Jews truly believe vandalism is always anti-Semitic? I'm guessing some people that have stolen a Menorah don't know a Menorah from any other holiday decoration. And as for the atheists, since I do believe in G~D, I am more than willing to let them have their Winter Solstice celebration and I don't care to listen to them whine about everyone else's celebrations. For those of us that don't celebrate the Winter Solstice in it's various religious and non religious forms, do we have to have UN-Happy Holidays? Does the Winter Solstice celebration actually include griping about the other celebrations? What a tradition that must be! We could simply try being generous and maybe even a bit kinder this time of year, and here's a crazy idea . . . we could try avoiding the points of contention.

O. J.'s Expression

It seems so many people are sporting the same expression O.J. had as the judge read his sentence. Now, I don't think everyone is looking at jail time, but it's more that expression of "this can't be happening" and "this isn't looking good." I have found this expression transcends most economic levels and social stratus and appears to simply be the expression of a bleak and dismal future. Of course the republicans are already pointing out what is going wrong now that Obama has been elected. I've had to gently remind several people, that he's not actually in office making any of these dismal decisions . . . yet! And then there are the democrats that are already sensing his backtracking and they aren't so sure this is the change they voted for. Then there is everything from Wall Street to Mutual Funds to 401Ks to CDs and Money Markets, all losing value, virtually daily. I heard that the government was recommending treasury bonds for safe investments. Really??? I suppose the government would want investors in government bonds, as the printing press at the mint is cranking out Franklins and IOUs faster than any of us can blink!
It seems, and I am not minimizing the prospect of prison, but the truth is, O.J. has a more secure future than many Americans. There are advocacy groups and legal watch dogs that prevent him from going hungry or being out in the cold, while in prison. So many people that have worked and saved are now facing the possibilities of a very bleak and uncertain future. Where do we invest? Where is the bottom of this mess? Why is our nation bailing out the rich companies and leaving the former middle class to go unemployed and homeless? Why is it, that here in America, O.J. Simpson, heading to prison, has more security in a roof over his head and 3 meals a day than many Americans?

Performance Evaluation

I find it interesting that Chris Dodd has called for the resignation or termination of the CEO of GM and designated him to be ineligible to continue leading the company, if any sort of bail out is to be received. And don't you just love it, Congress will impose a "CAR CZAR." I guess the media representing the powers that be think these catchy little phrases will divert the attention of the general population. America is steadily and swiftly moving toward fascism and socialism. While the Republicans holler and sputter about the alleged incoming "socialist," let me share the WordWeb definition of Socialism, even before Pres-elect is inaugurated. Socialism: 1. A political theory advocating state ownership of industry. 2. An economic system based on state ownership of capital. I believe that pretty much covers government run banks and manufacturing, which has been brought to us by the current administration. Let me also share the definition of fascism. Fascism: A political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government. Which would describe all the new uses of the word "czar" and assistance to various posts and bureaucratic departments. I hadn't really realized that our government has managed to become the worst of both, practically overnight. Oh, I know, if you're a republican, it's been brewing since the Carter days and if you're a democrat, Nixon started this mess. What I'm thinking is, we are simply getting the result of our own greed. Both parties represent a certain percentage of the population, or they are simply puppets for a bigger power, then we the people have either voted for it or gone along with it for nearly 40 years, and actually historically, much longer than that.
Back to Chris Dodd. I think he's quite a deal. He's been on Capitol Hill since the mid 70's, about the same period of time Rick Wagoner has been with GM, and worked his way up to CEO. General Motors has not had all bad years since the 70's, although the Reagan years did hinder every union job, they hung on and produced a few motor-trend cars of the year. What has Congress done, either the House or the Senate in Senator Dodd's long standing political career? He is Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and look what all has happened on his watch. I haven't heard him require the same of any Banking CEOs that he's spelled out for GM, but then I'm sure he has folks in banking and insurance "counting on him." In the grand scheme of this, and I do mean scheme, has Rick Wagoner really done a worse job than Chris Dodd?

Dear Big Three

Please stop groveling. The whole country is watching and frankly, it should just be beneath you. You CEOs ought to be smarter than this. Did you see AIG or Morgan Chase have to jump through all these hoops? NO! And some of those folks took the money and headed for vacations and retreats, more than once. This government of ours is having you jump and telling you it's not high enough. You CEOs are driving to Washington from Michigan and the union is willing to give up nearly everything to maintain the factory. CEOs have promised to work for a dollar and the union will just about pay to keep their jobs! See what the powers are doing to you? Al Gore gets to ride around in his Escalade and a private jet to accept awards about conserving energy . . . AIG has partied hearty on the tax payers bail out! Congress isn't taking any cuts in pay. The banks all have more money and have now decided to stiffen their loan regulations, so that translates to being paid twice. They collected from the borrower while they could, then they foreclosed and our government paid them to do so. Don't you see, Big Three, you are out of the loop!!! As the powers that be, keep moving the hoop, there is something they haven't told you and I can't believe you haven't figured out. You, Big Three, are not part of the global plan! The Big Three were actually built by a spirit of entreprenurialism, not hook and crook! See, how you just won't fit into the present political agenda? And just a thought here . . . Don't you wish you had all that money that the lobbyists have used to deal with Congress in the past? You wouldn't even be needing to ask for a bailout, right! I read the lobby funding in the past has been substantial. And truthfully, what do you have to show for it, now?
I couldn't help but notice that the old AMC company has renamed itself and redesigned it's product. GM, I love my Cadi and have loved them for years, but in days gone by, when I had to be a bit more economical, I enjoyed my Javelin and just loved my AMC Spirit! AMC is now AM General and they are making HumVees with a military contract, and I read they are also selling these to other countries. Big Three, you have provided jobs for millions of Americans for over a century, but the time is coming to an end. There is an agenda that is bigger than the Big Three.
The Big Three has been the backbone of the American economy for years, but that time, unfortunately, has past. We are moving into a global economy. Accept it with your heads held high. Your time of contribution simply has expired in this new world agenda that was prophesied in the Revelation, and envisioned by Bush 41.
My advice, at this point. Don't do what the politicians have done, don't do what the insurance company has done, and don't do what the banking industry has done. Don't sell your souls . . . In the long run, it just isn't worth it!

Intelligence

I'm still doing a bit of searching and listening as the Big 3 promise all sorts of things AIG and the banks didn't have to, and I think I'm developing a theory, as Nancy P. tells the CEOs what she expects. I, personally, would not feel safe in any vehicle designed by a company that is controlled by Congress. But this isn't our topic today.
I couldn't help but notice George W. Bush's statement regarding his regret of a war based upon faulty intelligence. I think it's odd, now that over 4,000 US soldiers have died, many more thousand disabled, we'll never know how many Iraqi citizens have been killed, and as a nation we deposed a sovereign government that was not an imminent threat to us, and all he can say is he regrets it! I get numerous e-mails every week from someone that is desperately trying to still justify this outrage that we have perpetrated in Iraq. I do support the troops and I wish they were home, and I truly think it's outrageous that more are being sent. Sooner or later, if these so called liberated Iraqis want their liberation, they need to take care of it. Of course, the people are simply now, answering to and fearing a new regime, the regime that wanted Saddam Hussein out of their way . . . Which just happens to be one of the sources of the so called faulty intelligence. Looks to me, if it truly was faulty information given to our leader, then he got played. He shot his mouth off and sent in his troops without a genuine purpose and without considering the cost. And now he says he regrets it. Well I have another observation. This so called faulty intelligence was discovered to be wrong in 2004, and yet the American occupiers led the new Iraqi leadership through some sort of kangaroo puppet court that resulted in the murder of the deposed leader. There was nearly a two year gap between uncovering the fact that we went in on false information and the death of Saddam Hussein. I'm certainly not defending his methods, but he was a descendant of Abraham, and a Christian leader ought to know what's involved in causing them problems, much less taking their life without provocation. Again, he now says he regrets taking action on faulty intelligence. In supporting the troops, I do not support this war. I think our young people are being sacrificed for egos and money and oil.
And so to all you people who are sending e-mails about how this war in Iraq is protecting our freedom, I have to tell you, you're wrong. Our president says we're there on "faulty intelligence!"

A Legacy of Values

I read part of President Bush's comments regarding his legacy and his values as President. He said he didn't sell his soul and is leaving Washington with the same values he entered. I can't argue with that. It was those very values of his that prevented me from voting for him either time. Oh, I've been told I can buy his biography and read all about his life, his values, and his inspiration for change. Well, I can look around and see that people live what they actually believe. They make their decision based upon what they actually believe. I know, you can read a person's life and get the truth much easier than you can off the pages of a book. That's why even G~D put HIS Word in human form. And anyone that claims any values based on G~D needs to demonstrate those values in life and leadership, not book sales. Through these past eight years I've tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, which has ultimately always resulted in the same thought. I just don't think he's bright enough to have conceived all the diabolical destruction that has been brought on us and the world under his administration. And to be fair, even knowing, I'm sure, there are brains behind this outfit and he is simply the figurehead and puppet, our leaders and those behind them are not entirely to blame. We the people have been a party to this destruction and delusion, as well. After all, a President doesn't just land in the White House one day. Even though I honestly believe the elections are just a motion of formality and already decided before the ballots are cast, I do know our leaders embody the heart of the majority of the people at the time. He has certainly been no exception to that rule. The pundit following, the war-mongering are all confirmation that the American public really did want this sort of leadership for a time. So although he was appointed President in 2000, the popular vote was still indicative that half of the population shares his values and more than half of the Supreme Court. Now, with two relatively young appointments by George W., the Supreme Court will truly be a legacy of his values. So, the same values that once bought 1% of a ball team on borrowed money has led us into not one but two wars on borrowed money and unlike baseball, wars don't have an annual World Series to end the rivalry. These aimless values that never knew a poor day in his life, has led the American people into aimless, fiscal, oblivion. These same values that once owned an oil company that drilled dry holes has led an entire country in the same economic direction! I'm glad he feels that he didn't sell his soul in Washington. I don't know when he did sell it, but I do know there have been many, many souls that have lost body and limbs due to his sense of self-defined values that he holds in such esteem. He does still have followers that have remained faithful to him even through this horrifically poor judgment and have clambered after the new rising republican star. The one person that makes George W. Bush look like Mensa material is Sarah Palin. And so with the introduction of Sarah, the legacy of George W. Bush doesn't seem quite as void of cohesive thought. I will say this, regarding the self-valued legacy of George W. Bush. I believe only his Presidency could have brought Americans out to vote in the throngs and numbers of '08, as never before. I think only his Presidency could have brought America, in less than 50 years from the civil rights marches to the election of a black man for President. I think, only his Presidency, could have caused a man with the middle name of, Hussein, to be elected. I think only the Presidency of George W. Bush could have made the republican party sit down and say, we'd like to take a little break from our power quest.
It's been quite a presidency and he is leaving quite a legacy. I pray it's a powerful enough legacy that we, as a nation, never repeat these last eight years.

Too Big to Fail

I've been hearing in the news for several weeks now, that our government is picking and choosing who will receive help and who will simply sink. This latest terminology has truly gotten me thinking. If CitiGroup or whomever is "too big to fail," but will, without government intervention, they have already failed. And to hear the rest of our economy is dependent upon the success of CitiGroup, then that should indicate just where our economy truly stands. When a young mother needs government assistance we hear all sorts of commentary, "she's failed, ruined her life, another child growing up in poverty" . . . but a corporate giant can receive government assistance because they are so rich and so important . . . and have been so successful. Why is it some in this world can fail and others can be held up in judgment and still others can simply take a trip and live lavishly on the money of others? As for me personally, one of the many that is not too big to fail, I am ever so thankful, that as an indebted government without a vision or a standard, brings billions of unbacked dollars to the "rescue" of yet another failed bank, that my G~D is too big to fail!

Cruising on the USS Ameri-nomic

I think I've finally gotten the plan figured out. First, in this exclusive cruise line there are clearly no need for cars. Got that Big 3? Next, we all need to understand there is first class and there is economy class, a.k.a. standard or coach. There are a few terms between first class and standard class, usually for the sake of expensive semantics. You may hear luxury, business or executive class from time to time. Now, how does all this apply to our sinking American economy while we still try to keep this luxury liner afloat? First we have to come to the understanding that just because we are all "in the same boat" doesn't mean we all have the same accommodations. First and foremost are our leaders and unlike a cruise ship, they do not bear the responsibility of the captain and crew. Our leaders will not sink with the rest of us, actually they will ride this calamity out in comfortable first class or retire to executive class on another ship with some esteemed colleagues. They will of course, continue to offer steering advice, and tell the rest of us in coach that we are all in this together. Next there are the executives and some of them warrant executive class and others, business class, this is where our leaders come in. The leaders, sort of like captain and crew determine the accommodations and arrangements, but again, they will not be going down with the ship. I've read there is even talk of pre-emptive pardons for some in various levels of the luxury class. Now, moving right along to the economy class. If you will look to your left, you will see plenty of opportunities for free buckets and containers. And if you will look to your right, you will find a few used life preservers and snorkels at a reasonable premium price. The good ones, of course are reserved for the non-economy classes to use in their transference to another ship. Now, here is the ultimate plan. For those that get in line to the right, while supply lasts, you will have access to the gear, once the supply is exhausted a select few will be paid to take a bucket or container, but not to worry, you will retain your right class status, none the less. When those in first class have safely embarked on another vessel, their seats are reserved for you. As for all those with a bucket or container, I believe we all now recognize the term Bail . . . Out. And that will be the task of those in the economy class, as the USS Ameri-nomic goes down.

NASA: Making Urine into Drinking Water

I heard this all last week and was generally disgusted by the entire concept, but then I realized . . . What's the big deal with NASA doing this? It's been happening on earth for years, it's called Public Utilities. Although I understand there is some sort of malfunction with the processing equipment on the space station. Wow! Would we know if there was here? A few months ago we all read that there were traces of pharmaceuticals in our drinking water. In this pill happy society, we know the pills aren't just getting flushed, directly. As we continue with our technological advances, I just have to wonder, why drinking urine is all right, if there are enough chemicals added and the process is "scientific enough." Call me old fashioned, but I just don't think it makes sense at any time. Anyway, back to NASA. I was truly shocked that the astronaut thought this was a pretty big deal and a great advancement, and yet in his voice was a bit of reticence. If he is on the public water system on earth, he doesn't have to go to the space station to as he put it, "make yesterday's coffee into today's!"
As for me, I believe I'll just pass on this refashioned beverage. If a beverage is going to be transformed, I believe I'd prefer something I've read about elsewhere!

For the Record

Since we as a country don't seem to remember anything past yesterday, except of course, unless Rush says it; I'd like to preserve just a few facts before the revisionism takes over. I realize Republicans are already "preparing" themselves and the rest of us for the Obama administration. And I'm well aware that for the last 8 years they have desperately clung to some sort of blame toward the Clinton administration. I didn't vote for the President-elect, but let's not forget that he is certainly walking into a mess, a bigger mess than 2 years of a democratic Congress have made. Now, if recent history continues as it has been, when Pres-elect takes office, wouldn't he have a free ride to blunder and twist promises and it should all be blamed on the Bush administration, right?
And from the sound of Pres-elect's appointments, I'd say the change on the way, is virtually minuscule. It's going to be career politicians, all over the place, and many of the same ol' ones.
Now, just in case anyone is aware of any facts in recent history, let us remember this. Before this past 20 some months, there was 12 years of a Republican Congress. And before this past administration, there was a Democrat administration that spoke ever so smoothly. And before that, there was a harsh Republican administration that spoke quite sternly, with a democrat Congress. And before that we had an administration that was designated by Iran and Iran was rewarded with arms! That's right, there were hostages in Tehran whose lives were threatened if Jimmy Carter was re-elected. President Reagan apparently pleased the Iranian regime and made an arms deal with them. As a sad bitter minority prepares to blame Obama for everything, let us not forget that this same sad bitter minority has blamed Clinton at every opportunity, through the current administration. Even in the face of the bait and switch of the present administration, from WMD to Wall Street's Bailout, the supporters simply accept this as "unexplained" or try to blame the left or the citizens or the borrowers or anyone but their man!
I'm sure Pres-elect will not be perfect, no one is. And I'm sure some of his decisions will result in my being very glad I didn't support him or vote for him, but . . . he's certainly not responsible for the collapsing economy and the prolonged wars with no end in sight, but he'll receive the blame, anyway. I don't look for him to make great changes or even good ones for that matter, but he didn't start these messes and I have no earthly idea what human being could clean them up.

Eileen Wilbur told The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro the letter sent her blood pressure soaring, and pointed out that stamps cost 42 cents.

City Collector Debora Marcoccio said the letter was among 2,000 sent out. A computer automatically prints letters for accounts with an overdue balance, and they are not reviewed by staff before being mailed, she said.

The letter warned of a lien and a $48 penalty if the overdue bill is not paid by Dec. 10. The charge was from the previous fiscal year, which ran from July 2007 to July 2008.

"My question is, how come it wasn't paid when the (original) bills went out?" Marcoccio said.

Wilbur's daughter, Rose Brederson, who discovered the bill in her mother's mail, called the situation "ridiculous." But she said her mother, who has lived in the home since 1959, would likely end up paying the penny.<<<

I'm all about paying my bills, but I'm guessing it was simply an error in writing out the check and to be honest, I would have assumed if I had underpaid a bill, it would have already been added to the next month's. Don't you think Debora's comment absolutely demonstrates the logic in which our government operates? Of course the best way to handle this situation would be to get authoritative, right Deb?

On a More Personal Note

My husband says I am critical, cranky, and dissatisfied with everyone around me. I told him, I thought he was right, it was probably the company I've been keeping . . . We all tend to want to assess a mess and blame somebody, anybody; politicians, Wall Street, pundits, or reporters and when it all boils down to brass tacks, or tax as the case may be, who is actually affected? I know when I'm fed up, it only affects me, as my husband told me does his best to ignore any complaints. And I thought, that probably is the same way the politicians see the constituents. Another interesting fact I've learned about our present leader and our leader-elect. Our President goes to bed every evening pretty early, which seems to me to indicate, the problems aren't keeping him awake at night. I read that even through campaign strategy meetings, Pres-elect had to monitor his Black-berry regularly. And just last night, my husband told me there was no resolution to my complaint and he was going to bed. He used to just take calls through our "quality time." This made me realize what is happening nationally, is only the results en mass, of what is happening individually. It seems that all of America is realizing just how insecure our future truly is, and it's got to be some body's fault, and nobody is listening to our complaints. I heard President Bush say the other day, "it didn't happen overnight and it won't be resolved overnight." Well, really now? I also heard him say just one month before the crisis was announced, that our economy was secure. Alright, so it didn't happen overnight, it took a month . . . I'm thinking this automaker bailout may just be some sort of smoke screen to keep us occupied while something bigger happens. Congress is finished at the end of the week and a new one will convene a couple of weeks before a new President is inaugurated, so I just can't help but wonder what is in store for us from Thanksgiving through New Year's. I'm thinking as the economy goes global, that making cars just isn't going to be America's contribution. Maybe in the global economy Germany or Japan gets to make all the cars! But back to our month with recessing politicians, and plans for new administrations. I theorize that this gives "we the people" a month to get our ducks in a row, while the officials wring their hands, debate, and take recess. What can we do? Can we adjust our spending, buy what's truly needed, change our habits, and assess where we are in life? Or just spend another month blaming the other party and the corporate elite and the welfare recipients, and gripe about trying to maintain our regular spending habits. I say, the only way to repair the country is with a new assessment, personally. We can change the economy by what we buy, what we spend, and what we don't. I chose Hanukkah gifts that inspire independence and creativity. I don't think my grandchildren read this blog, but just in case, I won't mention specifics. I did get the girls a keepsake and our grandson a special something from days gone by, and I kept these items under $20.00, and one apiece. The rest of the seven days, they will be opening mind challenging puzzles, crafts, and even a few home made items. I didn't go all out this year, and I realize prices have increased, but I didn't chintz out either. I didn't buy any of the trendy stuff, as I have no idea what is trendy. Rather I like to refer to our gifts as practical yet special and somewhat unique. We created a game earlier this year called ECONAMOK, long before the economy was declared to have run amok, and the grandkids play it when they come. It of course has a political, socio-economic theme to which our grandkids caught right on. As the months unfolded, I was shocked to see how close to reality the game has been. So this year, we'll have a new Hanukkah tradition. We'll light candles, play dreidel and eat latkes, and one evening we'll play ECONAMOK, so our grandchildren can be prepared for what the world will offer.

Real Change or Same Ol' Rhetoric?

The political headlines have been pretty catchy this week. Seems everyone that had nothing nice to say about each other are having dinner together and now have all sorts of good things to say! Well, I haven't heard about the Cheney Biden dinner, but GOP contenders are all ready to be supportive of our new president, and our new president is ready to cross the aisle in assembling his staff . . . I read something to the effect of 7,000 positions to fill. Now that's not new positions, just rearranging the current ones with new personnel. Just what will those 7,000 people that will be leaving do after January 20? Do they go on unemployment or become lobbyists?
Back to a change in Washington. I realize, since so many citizens are concerned about Pres-Elect's inexperience, he is going to surround himself with seasoned politicians as advisers. So what's change about that? And really, I don't want American politicians to harbor grudges, but seriously, if all the GOP thinks Pres Elect is a socialist, why would they be supportive of that? I'm not, if he is. If we're heading for socialism and infanticide, I don't want to be supportive of that, any more than I was supportive of war-mongering and the direction toward fascism of the past 8 years. Although I do think it's about time politicians were civil, this new wave of support just makes me think you can't believe anything they say, on either side of the the election.
Here's my thought for what it's worth. If Pres-elect wants real change, don't fill his cabinet and staff with seasoned politicians. Get real people involved, like the ones that knocked on doors and made phone calls. The Secretary of Agriculture ought to be a farmer or rancher! The Secretary of State needs to be someone that truly does know how to grit their teeth and smile through nonsense and double-speak. Okay, based on the Monica incident, I guess Hillary would be a good choice there. If Pres-elect really thinks what he said as he campaigned, then I think he needs to totally reassess Homeland Security, all together. We didn't have it before this past administration, and I really don't think we need it. If he really wants to bring change, let's see a Democratic President downsize government. This sounds like the same thing we've seen before. Promises, promises, promises, and the people will work and give up their taxes and the people will take jobs just to have jobs, and give up their taxes. Go ahead with handouts and perks, but get rid of half of the bureaucrats in Washington and that will be change. If anyone is doubting his patriotism, then let's see him do things the way the Founding Fathers did. Real people in real control of their own government. It worked once, but to get back to that would take true change . . .

Self-Esteem

I read a really interesting article today about the self-esteem of young people today. Turns out the self-esteem agenda may have resulted in an over-inflated self-opinion for the next generation. With all the "proper psychological buzzwords, we won't use the word arrogant. It's just that young people today have the idea that they are above the average standard, by about 80%, which of course is a mathematical impossibility. This generation that grew up in one parent households has a really distorted view of self-worth all the way around and have grown up with the idea that they truly do exceed the standard of average. Oddly, the research in this particular article compared the young people of 2006 with the youth of the 70's. I say oddly, but I guess I do know a number of people that are about my age that have kids that are just now at the threshold of adulthood. My daughter, on the other hand is already over 30, and I think she is at the leading edge of realizing an over valued self-esteem is highly over-rated, and clearly not what is needed on the job market! I find her quite amusing as she evaluates herself, weaknesses or strengths in the job market and security for the 21st Century. Of course I'm her mother, but I think she's got a pretty level perspective of what she aspires and what she can actually attain. She wants what her grandparents achieved. She wants to go for the gold, work alot of hours and achieve "comfortable." I've noticed the next group of young people, and they are just barely younger than she is, but still raised in single boomer households also have a college degree, but a lifetime of excuses and reasons to not apply. They would rather just be comfortable in their "if only" "would-a, could'a, should'a been" under achievements. And then there are the young people from 16-25 that truly believe they are all going to be stars, and if not stars, at least famous. This is the generation in which many jobs will be beneath them. So, I guess, fortunately for them, there won't be that many jobs, anyway. And fortunately for nearly 80%them, according to the poll, they know they should hold out for the high profile, high income positions of affluence.
What have we done? I know, as a boomer, I simply experienced parenthood from the knee jerk reaction perspective, and unfortunately passed that along. When I was growing up, we the young people of the 70's had just missed everything. My parents had the freedom which they flaunted regularly of being young people with working moms in the 50's. And the oldest boomers were already irritating everyone . . . what with political rights and constitutional freedoms! My parents told me I could do anything I set my mind to, but I only remember that being said when I had failed or not met the standard they expected. Could be I don't remember it accurately, but that is irrelevant, in hindsight, as that is what I based my perspective upon, as I raised the next generation to embrace self-esteem and love freedom. I think, however; a generation or a people truly only desire freedom and reach and strive to accomplish, if self-esteem is not nurtured in hollow encouragement and excuses, or becomes a foregone conclusion based on empty praise.

Why a BailOut Will Not Help the Economy

Well, here I sit blogging away like some gloomy gus, but it really must be said. First, I have to address the great line from Sarah Palin, since she has already commented on us "bloggers" sitting in our parent's basements . . . I'm older than she is and my husband and I own our home, and paid for our own clothes, I might add . . . Now with that being said, I read that she would be honored to work with the Obama administration, even if he did "pal around with terrorists . . ." Now, there's my non-partisan part in helping Sarah stay in the spotlight just a bit longer. I just can't imagine wanting that much attention, but to each his own. Now, on to the real topic at hand. We know that the auto makers are asking for government assistance, and we know that banking, Wall Street, and insurance have already received a government hand-out, but what does the auto industry's request really mean?
Our government is providing a TARP (troubled asset relief program) and on the surface, except for the fantastic bonuses for CEOs and really great parties and retreats that some are financing, it sounds like a boost for the economy. Actually when we step back and look just a little deeper or get a broader perspective, this bailout is far from a boost for what truly ails the economy. The BailOut amounts to nothing more than providing some money to corporations so they can keep paying their employees to continue coming to work. The actual product of the business has become irrelevant, and the long term need to keep employees amounts to needing employees to have withholding so the retirees can continue to collect benefits. Again, the actual product of a business is completely irrelevant in this BailOut plan. Bailing out the Big 3 auto makers is "only fair" after the Wall Street BailOut and banking subsidies, but the bottom line will remain insolvent. the Big 3 auto makers would not be having money problems if their product were providing a profit, but it isn't. Their product is only providing a place for the work force to come, and the work force is providing a withholding tax, and the withholding tax is providing care for those that are not producing anything except medical bills.
My husband and I went out to lunch today. We went into a nearby city to shop for Hanukkah gifts and my husband treated me to lunch. As we sat there discussing the shopping and the gifts and this blog in the planning, he made the comment that he had noticed a change in spending in some places, but not in others, for instance the restaurant where we were dining didn't appear to be affected by the economic gloom. I looked around and agreed that we had noticed a difference in some places. The stores in which we had stopped were not crowded and there were a number of sales that only a few years ago would have brought the shoppers out in droves. I also noticed in the restaurant, the median age must have been 70. As I looked around, I noticed a couple of people that were very obviously disabled or special needs and the rest of the crowd made me look like a kid. I'm 50 and without a doubt, I was the youngest diner in the restaurant. Only the serving staff was younger than I. So, this bailout on Wall Street will keep the group with the most expendable cash still spending . . . those that are living on their investments along with the withholding from their grandchildren's paychecks.
The problem with our economy is simple and it is this. The working class isn't producing anything the working class is buying. The main contribution being made by the working class right now, is withholding tax, and those that are working are the only ones contributing at all. Our economy is a shambles because it is capitalism based upon making money, not product. BailOuts won't help. Stimulus checks won't help. Certainly politics won't help. We need to become a nation that produces a product that is needed! The TARP just won't cover that!

I read yesterday that the President and President elect were meeting privately in the Oval Office, but today I heard what was discussed, at least one topic that connects with another! But then I also saw a picture, so obviously they weren't alone. So, who spilled the beans? I've wondered. The media says President Bush is pretty upset, but then his party says you can't trust the media, so we don't know if he's upset about something someone else did or if this so called leak is just part of the program. I'm sure the President elect is getting his ducks in a row to satisfy those that put him in office. I'm a bit skeptical as to who that actually was though. I mean with unemployment rates soaring, foreclosures at every hand, and the price of gasoline what it was through his campaign season, I just find it difficult to think it really was the average citizen funding his campaign. And if it was, then my concern for their finances was certainly misplaced. If Americans can actually submit their pictures and stories of needing food pantries and subsidies and donate money to a candidate, there is something fundamentally flawed with that thinking and those priorities. I'm going out on a limb here, but I would guess the same lobbyists that have donated funds throughout our political process have simply done so again, just in a different way. I'm no rocket scientist and I'm basically technologically challenged, but I could certainly sit here and press enter using different IDs through yahoo, Gmail, and hot mail, if I had a mind to. That doesn't really seem like much of a stretch at all. But that's just my theory. I just don't think Obama is bringing change. I believe, anyone that still thinks our political process is a two party system that is divided by partisan issues, is just kidding themselves or simply unable to process the facts. The facts are, Obama has voted for a number of bills, President Bush has sent to Congress, including the BailOut. The facts are, as the campaign continued, Obama changed his stance to much more of the same war waging perspective that we have already seen. But those are only my personal observations based upon facts.
Mike Huckabee has his own show now and he's considering a 2012 bid, again. John McCain, well I haven't heard much, but I hope he's being honored today for his status as a veteran, a POW, and a sacrifice for the GOP. As for Sarah, I'm sure she'll stay in the news, she seems to like the attention and I would imagine she's already considered 2012 before November 4. Again, just my personal observation.
I still don't see any politicians in place, newly elected, or making plans to actually represent "we the people."
